Steve' Stack Of Wax

Steve's Stack Of Wax Record Hop

After listening to his parents old 45’s and disliking the sounds of the day, Steve entered the Rock n Roll scene in 1978.

Steve started to attend his local Rock n Roll clubs in the Sutton/Mansfield area of Nottinghamshire, places like the “Golden Diamond”, and the “White Swan”, which was the home of the “Mansfield Rock n Roll Club this was a weekly event, featuring the top bands of the day, i.e.: Crazy Cavan, Flying Saucers etc…

As the early 80’s approached getting a driving licence was the passport to freedom and of course travel.

Places to be seen at back then, where the “Braughton Inn” at Sheffield, the “Black Bull” at Doncaster, and “Cliffton Hall” at Rotherham, plus other clubs in Leicester and Derby, after all this travelling and listening to various dj’s, playing a cross selection of rockin’ music, Steve finally got the dj bug.

In 1983 Steve started a weekly record hop with a friend  called Tony Reagan at the “Steelmelters Arms” in Chesterfield, and later a Sunday night hop at the “Telmear Lodge” also on the outskirts of Chesterfield.

In 1985 Steve decided to move south to the coastal town of Bournemouth, where Steve still lives today but now with his own family.

It was around this time he met Brian (Editor of "The Velvet Collar") who was living in Bournemouth at the time.

Over the next 3 years or so, Steve & Brian plus other local Teds travelled over the south, attending the local Rock n Roll clubs, in Bristol, Warminster, Brighton, and of course Bournemouth.

In 1989 Steve started to dj again at various venue's in Bournemouth with a friend called "Ray's Record Riot", this was the start of a great partnership on the decks, but nothing last forever, and Steve went on alone in 1993 when he started his monthly Record Hop at the "Portman Hotel".

It was this period Steve was booked to dj at the "International Teddy Boy Weekender" in Gt Yarmouth, along side his friend and fellow dj "Wildcat Pete", where they would be at the forefront of the 90's Teddy Boy movement, also during this period Steve met Geoff Barker a veteran London dj who had moved into commercial radio, and was hosting a Saturday night Rock n Roll program on the "Classic Gold" network.

Going to a radio station and help choose the music was great at the time, because it helped get new records played by the bands of today or the latest dance floor fillers, and just to finish off this exciting period, a booking came to dj at "Tom Ingram's Hemsby No17 Weekender".

In 1997 Steve and some of his close fiends started the "Bournemouth Rock n Roll Club" at the "Queens H.C", it was a monthly event with top bands and guest dj's from all over even "Big Daddy" from Birmingham.

Also during this period Steve started to work at other Rock n Roll clubs    like Southampton, Portsmouth, Swindon, Guildford, and the "Rotunda" Bristol, working alongside original artists like Bill Haley's Comets, Billy Lee Riley, Sonny Burgess, Mac Curtis, and Ray Campi,

plus bookings came to dj in Germany. The first being a Christmas gig at the "Texas" in Frankfurt with Crazy Cavan and other local bands.

As the millennium approached Steve was booked for the "Rhythm Riot" in November 1999, bookings were also received for the "Rockers Reunion"

in January 2000, plus the first "Wildest Cats In Town" then based in North London before relocating at "Lowestoft", on the East Coast, and finally the weekender in "Heidelberg" Germany Plus a return to the "Rhythm Riot".

In 2002 Steve was booked for the "Summer Jamboree" in Italy plus various other weekenders like the first "Ready Teddy Go" at Cleethorpes, and "Shake Rattle and Roll" at Gt Yarmouth.

In 2003 Steve found himself at the first "Dutch Teddy Boy Weekender" in Vlissingen Holland, and at the "High Rockabilly" in Barcelona Spain, working alongside Billy Lee Riley, Jack Earls, plus the cream of today's Rockabilly artists and bands.

In 2004 Steve found himself back at the "Heidelberg" weekender, working alongside Texas Rockabilly Alvis Wayne, and at the "High Rockabilly" in Barcelona, Spain, plus the "Rhythm Riot", the ultimate R&B/Roots weekender.

In 2006, Steve was offered his first official booking as a M.C., at the annual "Rockers Reunion" all dayer in Reading.

Steve was also booked for a return visit to the "Wildest Cats In Town" at Lowestoff, then abroad to the "Summer Jamboree" in italy and the "High Rockabilly" in Spain, working alongside "The Collin Kids".

Finally to finish 2006, Steve started to host a Rockin' Radio Show, you can listen in on a Wednesday night "Rockin' Party", every week between 8pm - 10pm, via the internet at http://www.forestfm.co.uk

With M.C. work lined up for the "Rockers Reunion", and the "Jive Jive Jive", plus bookings at the "Wildest Cats In Town", and "High Rockabilly" in Spain, plus the weekly Radio show, 2007 is looking very good indeed.

Finally last but not least Steve has been working on a project, a magazine about vinyl, covering our great music from the 1950's to the present day.

The object of this magazine is to show the records themselves, not just read about them.

The magazine is called "The Ultimate Addiction", and is available from the top uk record dealers or Steve's own Record Hop, from the end of March.
